November 12th, 2009

Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh India is also famous as the city of lakes.

Bhopal Lake

Bhopal Lake

The two beautiful lakes of Bhopal are sort of its nucleus. The lakes still dominate the city and is one of the most visited attraction in the capital.

Growth of Bhopal city have been witnessed by these lakes as the city kept expanding along their shores. Present day Bhopal, or as you may call it Modern Bhopal has a rich and multi-faceted profile; New Bhopal is cosmopolitan, but the old city still has a aristocratic and royal imprint of its former rulers, their abandoned palaces, the old and congested streets of the marketplaces. Special among the attractions are the fine old mosques.

Former rulers of Bhopal had succession of powerful Begums who ruled Bhopal from 1819 to 1926. The new Bhopal is even more elegant and impressive with its exquisite  parks and gardens, huge broad avenues that reminds us of being in the capital city of Madhyapradesh and the modern edifices. Bhopal is comparatively greener and cleaner than most cities in India.

Only few state capitals in India have a eventful history as Bhopal does. Since its establishment by the Afghan soldier Dost Mohammed in the year 1708, Bhopal city has witnessed many changes.

Bhopa has been through many phases, gentle as well as turbulent, prosperous as well as disastrous. Bhopal has been a city in which one finds traces of cultures as different as those of Buddhists, Hindus, Moguals and Afghans, all of which have been blended to perfection, providing Bhopal a distinct identity.
